How Often Should You Tune Your Piano?

Tuning a piano should be done as needed to maintain its sound quality. While concert instruments are tuned every time they are played, this level of frequency is not necessary for most people. For the average piano owner, setting a regular tuning schedule is both practical and effective. Annual maintenance is generally considered the minimum and is a good starting point for most households.

Factors Influencing Tuning Frequency

There is no universal answer to how often a piano should be tuned. The ideal frequency depends on several factors, including the owner, the piano itself, the environment where the piano is kept, and how frequently it is used. In some cases, tuning once a year may not be sufficient. Different pianos and their players may require different schedules and observing how well the piano holds its tuning after each service can help determine if the current schedule is appropriate.

The Role of Humidity

The most common cause of tuning fluctuation in pianos is changes in humidity. In Tucson, most homes maintain relatively stable humidity levels compared to other regions. However, it is important to note that indoor relative humidity is not the same as outdoor relative humidity. For example, even if the outdoor relative humidity is low (such as 10–15%), this does not guarantee that indoor levels will be equally low.

To accurately monitor and manage indoor humidity, the first recommendation is to purchase a reliable and accurate hygrometer. Knowing the precise humidity level in your home helps in maintaining your piano’s tuning stability. Calibration of hygrometers is offered as part of my service, provided the device is capable of being calibrated.

Importance of Regular Maintenance

Tuning is just the first step in piano maintenance. Pianos that receive regular care and attention will consistently deliver better performance and longer service life. Establishing and following a maintenance schedule ensures that your instrument remains in optimal condition for years to come.
